F3 and Associates combine Leica Scanners with Augmented Reality to give engineers X-ray vision
This feature article in LIDAR magazine (2013 VOL. 3, NO. 6) details how California-based F3 & Associates has combined laser scan data collected by Leica ScanStation scanners with advanced Augmented Reality technology to give professionals a compelling new way to visualize on-site what they can't otherwise see. In particular, using a simple tablet device, field staff can orient the tablet toward a wall, ceiling or pavement and see structures behind or under it, just as they were scanned (and modeled) prior to being covered up. Another exciting application lets an engineer or contractor orient the tablet toward an existing structure or element (e.g. valve) and see in 3D on the tablet a modification design proposed for that object (e.g. new piping and tie-in). The article also describes in detail the benefits of the Leica ScanStation's survey-grade dual-axis compensator combined with its high-accuracy-at-long-range capability to speed up field scanning and geo-referencing. F3 staff simply place the scanner on known control points at a refinery and use traditional survey traverse/ foresight/back-sight workflows to automatically register and geo-reference scans. The topics in this article were first presented in public by Sean Finn of F3 & Associates within the Laser Scanning/HDS track of the HxGN LIVE conference, June 4, 2013, at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. more
Tulloch Engineering speeds undergroud mine surveys with Leica HDS scanner and software
This feature article in LIDAR magazine (2013 VOL. 3 NO. 6) describes various applications and workflows for using a Leica HDS7000 ultra-high speed laser scanner for demanding underground mine surveys. The article cites some of the particular challenges of surveying underground: very dusty environments where it can also be difficult to tie accurately into control. By switching to ultra-high speed laser scanning, Tulloch is able to be more productive than traditional reflectorless total station and photogrammetric methods they previously used. In addition, the scanner is able to collect more detailed data for more accurate and detailed wire-frame, mesh, and cross-section deliverables. more
CyArk 500 re-launch at the Tower of London scores broad media coverage
Leica Geosystems long-time partner, CyArk, attracted broad media coverage of its October 2013 major re-launch of the "CyArk 500" initiative to digitally capture and preserve 500 leading heritage sites around the world over the next five (5) years. CyArk founder, Ben Kacyra, who also co-founded Cyra Technologies - the origins of Leica Geosystems' market-leading 3D laser scanning/HDS products business - was interviewed by dozens of television, print and online publications. A featured CNBC television piece, for example, shows Leica Geosystems laser scanners and laser scan images for numerous famous heritage sites. Kacyra cites a large network of laser scanning service providers as a key resource for the initiative. more
The Beck Group describes how Leica HDS hardware and software benefit their BIM projects
This feature article in the November 2013 edition of POB magazine gives the view of a leading architectural and construction firm, The Beck Group, on how they deploy BIM for the benefit of their clients. Beck uses a Leica ScanStation P20, Leica CloudWorx for Revit and other tools to deliver "higher quality and more sustainable projects ... with less risk, time and cost." The article provides guidance on how to best execute laser scanning for BIM in the field and office. more
Langan shares keys to their ROI success with Leica HDS laser scanners and software
A feature, cover article in the May 2013 issue of POB magazine describes six (6) strategies that one leading laser scanning services provider - Langan Engineering - uses to deliver a solid ROI (return-on-investment) on their investment in Leica HDS scanners and point cloud software. At the time of the article, Langan owned five (5) laser scanners including the recently released Leica ScanStation P20 ultra-high speed scanner. Key strategies for Langan include identifying your niche; understanding your capabilities; staying up-to-date on software; "going beyond"; breaking down barriers; and, investing in relationships. more
Leica Geosystems executive honored as “3D Industry Pioneer” by LiDAR Magazine
LiDAR Magazine, a leading trade publication dedicated to 3D laser scanning technology and news, cited Leica Geosystems long-time marketing executive, Geoff Jacobs, as one of the magazine's first-recognized "3D Industry Pioneers". Geoff was the second person to be cited as such by editor Dr. Gene Roe. The article describes Geoff's early path into the 3D laser scanning industry, starting with him joining Cyra Technologies in 1998 as the start-up company's first marketing professional. Geoff shares his recollections of introducing the technology to Leica Geosystems, which acquired Cyra in 2001, and a subsequent long string of technology and market advances that continued to propel the industry forward. He also provides a glimpse into the future of the industry. more
UK's Severn Partnership uses Leica scanners & software to extend survey business into ships
The cover story of Professional Surveyor Magazine's (PSM) April 2013 issue describes how a leading UK surveying company - Severn Partnership - diversified from their main civil and railroad infrastructure uses of Leica HDS tools into a lucrative new market: ships. The article is written by PSM editor Jeff Salmon and features an insightful interview with Severn Partnership's Managing Director, Nicholas Blenkarn. The article describes core skills that Severn was seeking to leverage and why they settled on ships for the next extension of their business. The article further details how the company went about achieving this goal - which they did very successfully! more
Diversification through scanning
This feature article in the February 2013 issue of Professional Surveyor Magazine (PSM) describes how US-based Fenstermaker & Associates used their Leica Geosystems laser scanning tools (hardware and software) and their own capabilities to successfully diversify their surveying and engineering business. The ability to use Leica scanners and software for traditional civil/survey mapping and as-built surveys and to then leverage the combined capabilities into new markets is well documented. In this case, Fenstermaker not only diversified their traditional civil infrastructure surveying services into "downstream" oil & gas clients (e.g. refineries), but they also successfully added new engineering documentation capabilities and dimensional control services to better service these new clients. For these extensions, Fenstermaker developed plant documentation skills with CADWorx software (provided by Leica Geosystems' sister company, Intergraph) and high-accuracy dimensional control capabilities based on Leica Geosystems survey and metrology-grade total stations. more
