Leica Geosystems provides solutions in the fields of archaeology and heritage. Our systems assist in the survey, extraction and rennovation of historic relics, artifacts, or landmarks from the sea or land such as shipwrecks, tombs, fossils and buildings.
Documenting local legends
The 3D Scan Lab at the Institute of Archaeology, Humanities Digital Lab at the University of Warsaw, Poland, specialises in 3D documentation of finds, monuments or objects of archaeological interests. Using the Leica ScanStation C10 and most recently, the latest Leica ScanStation P30, 3D Scan Lab produces comprehensive digital heritage scans to capture historical objects for posterity. They have documented such objects as the Songhellir Cave on the volcanic slopes of the Snaefellnes Volcano, Iceland, rock carvings and the Castle Hammershus in Bornholm, Denmark or a 13th century church in St. Crepin, France. This year they set their sights on a mysterious, pyramid-shaped tomb in Poland. more
Digitally documenting history for future generations
The more than thousand-year old Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma, a UNESCO world heritage site, is one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary and the second largest territorial abbey in the world. The wonderful wood carvings of the red marble Porta Speciosa, the original main entrance to the church during the Middle Ages, is the first masterpiece of the Hungarian classic Gothic style. In January 2014, engineers using the HDS7000 from Leica Geosystems, were able to document the fine details of this great portal, digitally preserving it for future posterity. more
Virtual Caves
The Piusa caves are a system of unique sandstone caves located in south-eastern Estonia only a few miles from the Russian border. The caves are the result of manual mining of glasssand during 1922 – 1966 and represent a system of underground galleries with sandstone columns and vaulted ceilings up to 10 m (30 ft) high. Since 2006 the caves have been closed to the public for safety reasons and only a small, secure part can be accessed today. 3D Technologies R&D scanned the caves and created the virtual caves provided at the visitor center using new interactive technology. more
Mighty Mo's Last Journey
When the USS Missouri was decommissioned on March 31st, 1992, the 887-foot-long Iowaclass battleship looked tired. Her worn and pitted teak deck had supported thousands of naval officers and their crews. The 1998 transfer of “Mighty Mo” to the nonprofit USS Missouri Memorial Association of Honolulu, Hawaii, spawned a new career for the historic battleship as a World War II museum next to the USS Arizona on Pearl Harbor’s Battleship Row. But the directors had an even bigger vision in mind – one that involved repairing and preserving the battleship for generations to come. more
Modeling Istanbul World's Largest Scanning Project
With a population of over 12 million, Istanbul is the world’s 5th largest city. Its rolling terrain, rich architecture, and Bosporus Strait views also make it one of the most magnificent. In 2003, UNESCO designated large portions of the historic Istanbul peninsula as protected areas. All further development of these areas was stopped until a detailed and highly accurate as-built 3D city model could be created for use by the city planning commission. It was urgent to complete the 3D city model as quickly as possible to lift the moratorium on development. more
Scanning on Washington's Shoulder
3D laser scanning has already changed the fields of surveying, engineering, construction, and forensics. Now, 3D laser scanning is changing the fields of education, cultural tourism, and cultural heritage preservation and management. With help and support from Scotland and Leica Geosystems, the non-profit organization CyArk carried out the first comprehensive documentation survey of the Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. more
Holy Caves in 3D
Kiev Pechersk Lavra in Kiev, Ukraine is a unique monastery complex. In the course of its history it has been visited by over 43 million tourists from all parts of the world. It consists of an above-ground part (a complex of religious buildings) and an underground part (caves). A Leica ScanStation 2 and total stations now help preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site. more
The City Walls of Dubrovnik
Geographica d.o.o. recently completed a major project which included scanning and comprehensive documentation of the almost 2 km long city walls of Dubrovnik in the very south of Croatia for the “Society of Friends of Dubrovnik's Cultural Heritage”, a group of engaged citizens. The medieval city, nicknamed “the Pearl of the Adriatic”, is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Purpose of the four year project was to fully document the current state of the city walls and fortresses for future improvements and in order to preserve their current state for upcoming generations. more
Recording World Heritage
CAP, the Cyrene Archaeological Project, is devoted to recording the remains of the Greco-Roman city at Cyrene in Libya and is a joint venture between Oberlin College (USA), the University of Birmingham (UK) and the Department of Antiquities (Libya). The site is part of the Green Mountain Conservation and Development Area, which was recently established by the Libyan government under “The Cyrene Declaration”. CAP’s aim is to record the standing structures and buried features within this UNESCO World Heritage Site in a systematic, traceable and comprehensive method using a combination of land-based, aerial and sub-surface measurement techniques – amongst them a Leica ScanStation and a Leica HDS6000 scanner. more
