Capturing Mt Rushmore with four Leica scanners: spectacular cover article

2010 Volume 7, issue 7 of The American Surveyor magazine includes a 9-page cover story on the ambitious use of four (4) Leica Geosystems 3D laser scanners to capture iconic Mt Rushmore. The CyArk project was done for the United States National Parks Service (NPS) with major support from local service firms and Scotland's Centre for Digital Documentation and Visualization (CDDV), a joint initiative between Historic Scotland and Glasgow School of Art's Digital Design Studio.
The project deployed a ScanStation C10, a ScanStation 2, an HDS6000, and an HDS6100. Each scanner was used on aspects of the massive project best suited to its particular capabilities. Accessing every part of the famous presidents' faces was no easy task. The article describes innovative methods used to capture every nook and cranny of the world-renowned monument in the spring of 2010. The project was performed for  preservation, education via the web, and promotion of tourism. The project is one of the Scottish 10 projects (5 projects in Scotland and 5 international projects) and the CyArk 500, a global effort to digitally preserve & share 500 of the world's most important heritage sites.
