Laser Scanning technology to end the dedicated survey field crew?

xyHt’s Winter Supplement 2014 gets the outlook on the future of surveying from James Shaw, surveyor for No.87 of ENR’s Top 500 Design Firms
This 2-page article asks James Shaw of RK&K Engineers, LLP for his outlook on surveying for 2015 and beyond. Shaw has been a professional land surveyor for 26 years, won Maryland's Surveyor of the Year in 2012, is the former president of the Maryland Society of Surveyors, and is its technology committee's chair. Shaw discusses his experience watching laser scanning and other "reality capture" technologies evolve since his first exposure to Leica Geosystems HDS technology in 2007. Shaw references the continuous march forward in hardware versatility and software automation, particularly in recent major improvements in automated/targetless registration and scan alignment tools (Leica Cyclone 9.0), as well as better automated feature extraction. Shaw discusses how this is changing the balance between field and office crews and prophesies the gradual elimination of traditional fully dedicated field crews as they blur or merge with office crews, creating more efficient overall workflows.
