Leica C10 and Cyclone help analyze structural integrity of threatened local heritage in South Africa

LIDAR News Magazine, Nov/Dec 2014
LIDAR News Magazine features a 4-page story on efforts using Leica's HDS solutions to digitally preserve historic vernacular architecture (architecture uniquely utilizing local materials) in South Africa. The African Conservation Trust and University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) utilized UKZN's two ScanStation C10s plus an HDR-capable scanner to digitally document two examples of local South African architecture: corbelled houses of the Northern Cape Province, and a Dutch (Voortrekker) Homestead in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. With recent fracking literally shaking the corbelled houses apart, combined with decades of misuse and neglect, these structures are collapsing. Only 136 remain and nine houses representing different architectural styles were captured and analyzed for structural integrtity. Cyclone provided detailed measurements and sectional views to identify structural deforation as the cause of major cracking in the walls. The Homestead is similarly under threat due to a bordering quarry mine. Frequent vibrations from mine blasting have shattered the main structure's walls and fully collapsed outstanding buildings in the last four years. Data provided by UKZN's C10 and analyzed in Cyclone is being used by local heritage conservators to determine if current structural braces provide sufficient stabilization or if additional measures are needed. Long term, the accurate detail of the point clouds will continue to provide condition assessement information, while also creating a lasting record of these unique and significant buildings before they are completely lost to resource extraction and/or neglect.
