Leica ScanStation C10 reduces cost, improves accuracy on aging dam civil survey

The American Surveyor, October 2014 featured cost-saving work for US Army Corps of Engineers
This 5-page, in depth article details how West Virginia-based Allegheny Surveys used a Leica ScanStation C10 laser scanner and Leica point cloud software to dramatically reduce cost and schedule for a 110-acre survey of a multi-faceted dam site in Ohio for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Use of their Leica scanning tools also provided, valuable additional benefits for the client, which led to additional scanning business. The article cites how laser scanning has saved time & money for every project where Allegheny Surveys used it instead of conventional surveying. For this project, scanning slashed field labor by 75% and also reduced office time. Of particular value for this project was the ability to take advantage of the versatile C10’s resect (survey) mode and its long-range targeting capability. Only 65 set-ups were needed for the 110-acre site; registration of multiple point clouds was done automatically upon import of the scan data into Cyclone software. Allegheny Surveys added value by supplying the client with TruViews of the site. This let the client, which did not have laser scanning software, to view the rich point cloud data in free TruView software and access X,Y,Z values to check elevation differences and site subtleties on their own without any training. The article also describes the selection of this project as a 1st place winner of the “HDS Plan Contest” at HxGN LIVE 2014 in the popular Civil/Infrastructure category.
