Leica Geosystems Announces Major Update for Leica CloudWorx Plug-in for Working with Point Clouds in AutoCAD
11 November 2013
(Heerbrugg/Switzerland, 11 November 2013) - Leica Geosystems announces several valuable, new features, such as the simple establishment of coordinate systems, a faster topographic mapping from point clouds , and a modern ribbon interface with intuitive icons for its popular Leica CloudWorx plug-in for working with rich, as-built laser scan data directly in AutoCAD. Leica CloudWorx for AutoCAD 5.0 increases office efficiency for both experienced AutoCAD 3D users and AutoCAD users new to working in 3D for architectural, civil/survey, and other AEC applications.
A rich, new set of features in Leica CloudWorx for AutoCAD 5.0 takes AutoCAD users to the next level of efficiency when working with 3D laser scans or High-Definition Survey (HDS) data inside AutoCAD and AutoCAD-based applications. These features can save hours per day for both experienced 3D users and those new to working in 3D.
Big office productivity gains for working with point clouds in AutoCAD
When working with 3D point clouds in AutoCAD, one of the main challenges is simply aligning the right X, Y, Z User Coordinate System (UCS) to the point clouds for desired views, such as elevation or plan, needed for architectural sketching. Leica CloudWorx for AutoCAD 5.0 makes it easy to set the right UCS and get to desired views for efficient sketching. To set the UCS, users can simply select combinations of visual point cloud features, such as a “wall and floor”, two intersecting walls, etc. Once the UCS is established, a single click lets users instantly align the view to plan or elevation. Further, for fast 2D sketching from 3D point clouds, a “Workplane” tied to the UCS, provides a convenient visual backdrop onto which snapped points are projected. As you’re sketching on the point cloud, a user can simply rotate to an isometric view to see the resulting 2D line work on the Workplane.
Faster topographic mapping from point clouds
For faster topographic mapping from 3D point clouds in AutoCAD, a “Points on a Grid” tool now lets AutoCAD users automatically establish evenly spaced, gridded points for direct use in creating an accurate ground surface/TIN. Likewise, users can now apply “SmartPicks” to automatically select individual “high”, “low” and “ground” points from dense scan data where such points may not be obvious.
Previously, advanced Workplane, Points on a Grid, and SmartPicks features were only available in higher end, standalone Leica Cyclone software.
Familiar user interface & easy scan data access for AutoCAD users
AutoCAD users will also appreciate Leica CloudWorx for AutoCAD 5.0’s modern ribbon style interface and improved icons that tightly integrate into AutoCAD’s ribbon interface. The familiarity of this interface and new, intuitive icons make it easy for AutoCAD users to locate and execute Leica CloudWorx tools. Finally, as with other Leica CloudWorx applications, users can work directly with Leica Cyclone scan data files without having to first go through the additional, time-consuming process of converting large scan data files into a different data format before they can begin to use them in AutoCAD.
Leica CloudWorx for AutoCAD is immediately available.
