Leica Geosystems Announces Ability for Direct Import/Export of Plant Models between Leica Geosystems Point Cloud Software and PDMS
11 November 2013
(Heerbrugg/Switzerland, 11 November 2013) - Leica Geosystems announces a new capability via Leica CloudWorx for PDMS for assessing proposed plant design models in their real world context as captured by laser scans. The long-standing neutral Cyclone Object Exchange (COE) file format is now available via Leica CloudWorx for PDMS as an option for importing/exporting 3D models specifically with PDMS.
Leica CloudWorx for PDMS 1.3
This popular plug-in for PDMS adds the valuable option of writing a neutral COE (Cyclone Object Exchange) file for (1) exporting plant models from PDMS into Leica Cyclone-based applications and (2) importing models created in Cyclone into PDMS. Imported and exported models are simple, geometric surface models that are valuable for assessing many practical considerations of proposed plant designs in their real world context as captured by 3D laser scanners. Practical considerations commonly addressed using simple geometric 3D as-built models include clash checking of equipment installation or removal plans; checking for adequate access by maintenance staff to new equipment planned for an existing plant; crane location planning; and, safety distance compliance checking, among others.
Importing 3D geometric PDMS models into Cyclone enables them to be viewed with as-built laser scans in Leica TruView software, a free and extremely popular panoramic viewer that enables anyone – not just CAD or 3D specialists – to intuitively view, measure and markup laser scan images. TruViews can be readily understood, for example, by Maintenance & Operations staff, safety personnel, contractors, and senior management. Previously, PMDS models could only be viewed in TruView by first converting a PDMS model to an AutoCAD or MicroStation model and then importing that model into TruView; the new capability eliminates those time-consuming steps. COE files exported by PDMS can also be read by AutoCAD and MicroStation.
Exporting COE model files from Cyclone (or AutoCAD or MicroStation) into PDMS now enables PDMS users to take advantage of the speed of creating simple, geometric plant models from laser scans in Cyclone for geometry-based design checks. This Cyclone-based process of just building simple, geometric as-built 3D plant models from laser scans is faster than the alternative of building fully intelligent as-built 3D models from laser scans within PDMS. The COE export ability from Cyclone also allows PDMS users to take advantage of the large installed base of laser scanning service providers who are already proficient with Leica Cyclone modeling of point clouds for building geometric models.
Leica CloudWorx for PDMS 1.3 is immediately available.
