Regional survey society uses Leica HDS solutions to train, aid maintenance at local museum

LIDAR News Magazine's 7-page cover story discusses a collaboration between Haag 3D Solutions, LLC, the Battleship New Jersey Museum, and Leica Geosystems to provide training in 3D data capture solutions to surveyors and engineers of the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors, while contributing to the digital preservation of the most decorated battle ship in US naval history, the USS New Jersey (a.k.a, the Black Dragon). As part of the Society's 150th anniversary, Leica and Haag volunteered training services and utilized a Leica HDS7000 scanner, two ScanStation P20s scanners, and a Leica MS50 to document the vessel as part of the exercise.
The ship receives 100,000 visitors annually, but its tight spaces and narrow corridors limit access. The Museum wishes to provide "virtual access" to these difficult or inaccessible areas, including access for disabled veterans no longer able to physically tour parts of the ship. The vessel is also expensive to maintain and needs a multimillion dollar restoration of its deck boards. After a day of scanning, and 5 billion points collected, the first immediate deliverable was a deck board plan for the Museum to use in trimming maintenance costs and guiding historical accuracy of the future deck restoration. Despite ship movement from swells and tides, the survey-grade tilt compensation in the ScanStation P20s was able to accurately compensate while scanning on-board. Combining the survey and scan data of the MS50 allowed a quick and easy registration of the scans in Leica's Cyclone software. Cyclone's limitbox tools allowed for visual QA/QC of the registration at overlaps between the three scan crew's 8 collection areas, as well as aiding cleaning (removal) of tourists roaming the decks.
